Water Conservation for Your Pool: 10 Effective Strategies

1. Cover the pool when you’re not using it
Evaporation is the main cause of water loss in a pool: it can amount to between 3 and 5 liters per square meter per day in hot and windy conditions. A summer cover (bubble wrap thermal cover) can reduce evaporation by up to 95%. It also keeps the water warmer, reduces chemical usage, and prevents leaves and debris from entering the pool.
2. Install windbreaks around the edges
Wind greatly accelerates evaporation. Planting hedges, installing bamboo fences, or placing fabric screens between the pool and the direction of the wind can reduce evaporation by 30 to 50%.
3. Monitor the water level
Keeping the water level between 5 and 10 cm below the top edge of the skimmer is sufficient for the filtration system to function properly and reduces water loss from splashing.
4. Detect and repair leaks promptly
An undetected leak can result in the loss of thousands of liters of water per month. To determine whether your pool has an actual leak or is simply losing water through evaporation, perform the bucket test: fill a bucket with pool water and place it on the top step. If, after 24 hours, the pool level has dropped more than the water level in the bucket, there is a leak. 5. Optimize filter backwashing

6. Collect and reuse rainwater
Rainwater can be used to top off the pool, provided it is properly treated with the appropriate products. In areas with sufficient rainfall, a rainwater harvesting system can significantly reduce municipal water consumption.
7. Choose a pool size that fits your actual needs
If you’re planning to build a new pool, choose the size carefully. An 8x4-meter pool has twice the surface area of a 6x3-meter pool and will lose twice as much water through evaporation. Often, a moderately sized pool perfectly meets your needs and results in substantial savings on water, electricity, and chemicals.
8. Use anti-evaporation products
There are liquid products that, when applied to the water’s surface, form an invisible molecular film that reduces evaporation by up to 40%. They are completely harmless to swimmers and compatible with all waterproofing systems, including reinforced liner.
9. Reinforced liner minimizes leaks
Pools finished with paint or microcement are prone to developing microcracks that cause leaks that are difficult to detect. Reinforced PVC membrane, when installed using heat welding, creates a completely watertight surface that virtually eliminates any risk of leaks through the pool shell. If your pool is chronically losing water, the solution may be to retrofit it with reinforced membrane.
10. Install a smart monitoring system
Automatic water analysis systems allow for precise dosing of chemicals, preventing overdosing that forces you to replace the water prematurely. Some systems also include level sensors that alert you to unusual drops in water level, which could indicate a leak.
