Types of Pool Ladders
Cast-in-place or concrete ladder: This is built into the pool itself, cast from concrete or shotcrete at the same time as the rest of the structure. Integration with Reinforced PVC Liner
When the pool lining is reinforced liner, the construction of the built-in ladder requires special attention. The steps must be prepared with a specific geometry to facilitate the liner installer’s work:
— The edges of the steps must be rounded (minimum radius of 5 cm) so that the liner fits without tension or excessive folds.
— The inner corners (where the step meets the riser) are reinforced with beads of flexible sealant before installing the liner.
— The liner is thermally welded continuously across the entire geometry of the ladder, without any cuts or seams that could act as weak points.
— The upper edges of the staircase are anchored and sealed with perimeter trim profiles.
A well-constructed and waterproofed concrete staircase with a reinforced membrane provides a waterproofing guarantee equivalent to the rest of the pool and has the same service life as the entire lining.
Anti-Slip Requirements
Spanish regulations (UNE-EN 13451 and the CTE) require that wet-traffic surfaces, including pool steps, have sufficient slip-resistant properties to ensure user safety. For pools with reinforced membrane liners, there are special versions of the membrane with a slip-resistant texture designed for use on steps, meeting the requirements for slip resistance when wet.
Trends and Prices
Integrated Roman steps with dark-colored reinforced liner (anthracite, dark blue, black) are the dominant trend in 2026, especially in pools with a contemporary and minimalist design. For a custom-built staircase with 3–4 steps that includes reinforced membrane, the cost ranges from €800 to €2,500. For full Roman steps (3–4 steps across the entire width of the pool), the cost can range from €2,000 to €5,000 or more, depending on the width and complexity.
Accessibility Considerations
In community or public pools, regulations require access devices for people with limited mobility. This may involve the installation of pool lifts, adapted pool chairs, or access ramps. In private pools, although not mandatory, more and more owners are opting for accessible designs that make it easier for seniors or people with limited mobility to use the pool, choosing beach-style entrances or stairs with sturdy, double-height handrails.
