LED pool lighting has revolutionized the way we enjoy the water at night. Types of LED Pool Lighting
Underwater recessed LED spotlights are the most common system. They are installed flush with the pool walls, typically 30–50 cm above the bottom, and project light upward, illuminating the entire body of water from within. Modern models include RGB for color-changing capabilities or cool or warm white light. Typical power output ranges from 15 to 30 watts per fixture. Surface-mounted LED spotlights are installed on the wall without recessing, making them ideal for renovating existing pools. They are particularly well-suited for pools with reinforced liner because they do not require drilling into the structure. Price installed: 100 to 250 euros per spotlight.
IP68 waterproof LED strips are installed around the perimeter of the pool or on the steps, creating continuous lighting with a striking visual effect, particularly attractive in modern minimalist designs. Price: 30 to 80 euros per linear meter installed.
Fiber-optic lighting keeps the light source out of the water and transmits light through waterproof cables installed in the water, ensuring that electricity does not come into direct contact with the water. Price: 2,000 to 6,000 euros for a complete installation. Common in high-end pools and spas.
Floating spotlights are the most economical solution without a permanent installation. USB- or solar-rechargeable floating lights that create ambiance without the need for construction work. Price: 20 to 100 euros per unit.
RGB Colors and Effects
Modern RGB systems allow you to choose from millions of colors and program dynamic sequences such as automatic color changes, rainbow effects, or synchronization with music. For family use, we recommend cool white light at 6,500 K for functional lighting and a second RGB circuit to set the mood in the evenings. Controls can be via remote control, mobile app, or integration with home automation systems.
Energy Savings Compared to Halogen Bulbs
Replacing 50-watt halogen spotlights with equivalent 15- to 18-watt LEDs results in a 65–70% reduction in electricity consumption. For 4 spotlights operating 4 hours a day for 5 months, halogen bulbs consume 600 kWh per season compared to 200 kWh for LEDs, saving about 72 euros per season. The investment pays for itself in 3 to 4 seasons.
Installation in Reinforced Liner Pools
Installing spotlights in pools with reinforced liners requires specific feed-through bushings and seals that allow the electrical cable to penetrate the liner without compromising its waterproofing. Safety Regulations
Underwater spotlights must operate at a very low safety voltage—a maximum of 12 volts—or with Class III reinforced insulation. It is mandatory to install an isolation transformer and a 30 mA ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) specifically for the pool circuit. Never install pool lighting without a licensed electrician to ensure the safety of all users.
