Infinity pool: price, design and how it works
Infinity pools, also known as infinity pools or pools with an infinite effect, are the icon of luxury in residential and hotel architecture. Their defining characteristic is that water reaches the edge of one or more sides of the shell and overflows in a controlled manner, creating the visual illusion that the pool merges with the horizon, the sea or the surrounding landscape. Behind that apparently simple beauty lies complex engineering and maximum-demand waterproofing.
How does an infinity pool work?
The operating principle of an infinity pool is hydraulically elegant. Water in the main shell is maintained at the exact level of the overflow edge (or edges). When the level rises slightly—by bather entry, by water heating, etc.—water spills over that edge and falls into a perimeter channel or directly into a compensation tank located below or adjacent to the main pool.
From that tank, the circulation pump returns the filtered and treated water to the main shell, completing the cycle. It is essential that the compensation tank has sufficient capacity to absorb all the water displaced when bathers enter the pool (generally between 200 and 500 liters per adult bather).
Types by number of overflow edges
One edge: The most common in residential pools. Only one side of the shell is overflow, usually the one overlooking the landscape or most spectacular view. It is the most economical design within the infinity category.
Two opposite edges: Two parallel sides of the shell are overflowing. Creates a very dynamic visual effect, as if the pool extended in two directions. Requires two channels and greater hydraulic complexity.
Full perimeter: All four sides of the shell are overflowing. It is the most spectacular design and the most technically and hydraulically complex. The perimeter channel surrounds the entire pool and the compensation tank must have large capacity. It is common in luxury hotels and high-end villas.
Price: how much does an infinity pool cost?
The cost of an infinity pool is significantly higher than that of a conventional pool of the same dimensions. The price difference compared to a standard pool ranges from 30% to 80%, depending on the type and complexity of the overflow. For a mid-size residential pool (8x4 m) with overflow on one edge, the total budget can be between €45,000 and €80,000. For more complex designs or with more edges, the cost can exceed €100,000.
The factors that most influence the price are the need for a compensation tank (additional construction structure), the circulation pump of greater flow, the specific hydraulic engineering, the finish level of the perimeter channel and the complexity of waterproofing.
Engineering requirements
Building an infinity pool is not just an aesthetic matter, but one of precise engineering. The level of the overflow edge must be maintained constant with millimeter precision: visible level variations would break the visual effect. This requires very precise automatic water level regulation systems, generally with high-precision float valves.
The structure of the overflow edge must also be especially robust to support the weight of water falling continuously and possible thermal expansion and contraction tensions.

Maintenance of an infinity pool requires special attention to water level (it must be replenished more frequently due to channel losses), perimeter channel cleaning (accumulates leaves and debris) and inspection of the compensation tank. With proper maintenance, a well-built infinity pool can last decades without problems.
