Pool fencing required: regulations and options in Spain
Pool fencing is a legal obligation in Spain aimed at preventing drowning accidents, especially of small children. Legal framework: what does the law say?

In general, the most common requirements established by regional regulations are:
— Minimum fence height: 1.2 meters, although some communities require 1.5 m.
— Access gate with automatic closure: The gate must close automatically and open towards the outside of the pool area. This ensures that a child who accesses it cannot be trapped inside.
— No climbing points: The fence should not have elements that allow a child to climb it easily (steps, ledges, large mesh grilles).
— No accessible gaps: Gaps between fence elements should not allow a child to pass (maximum 10-12 cm between bars according to regulations).
Permitted materials and their characteristics
Tempered or laminated glass: The most aesthetic and elegant option. It offers total visibility, perfect integration with modern designs and is practically unclimbable. The glass must be safety glass (tempered or laminated) with a minimum thickness of 8-10 mm. The cost ranges from €150 to €300 per linear meter installed.
Wire mesh: The most economical solution. It requires that the mesh does not allow climbing or child passage. There are PVC-coated versions (green, black) that integrate well into natural environments. Approximate price: €40 to €80 per linear meter.
Extruded aluminum: Vertical aluminum bars, anodized or lacquered, easy to clean and very corrosion resistant. Modern and elegant appearance, with good durability. Price: €80 to €150 per linear meter.
Wood or composite: Warm and natural aesthetic that integrates well in gardens. Requires moisture treatment. Composite (mixture of wood and plastic) offers better durability without maintenance. Price: €60 to €120 per linear meter.
Community pools: additional requirements
Pools in residential complexes, homeowners' associations or semi-public facilities have more stringent requirements. In addition to fencing, they usually require:
— Visible warning signage (depth, no diving prohibition, etc.).
— Permanent rescue equipment in the area (lifesaver ring with rope, rescue pole).
— Adequate lighting of the perimeter and interior of the water for nighttime use.
— In facilities of certain capacity, a trained lifeguard may be required.
— Record of incidents and maintenance logbook.
Approved installations and process
For the fencing to be legally valid, the installation must be carried out by a registered company and may require a certificate of compliance signed by the installer or by a competent technician. In many municipalities, fencing is part of the pool construction permit and must be approved along with the project.
