The pool heat pump has become the most efficient and cost-effective long-term solution for keeping the water at the ideal temperature throughout the season. How a Pool Heat Pump Works

The operating principle is similar to that of a refrigerator, but in reverse. The pump extracts heat from the outside air using a fan, concentrates it through a compressor, and transfers it to the pool water via a heat exchanger. For a standard family pool measuring 8x4 meters with an average depth of 1.5 meters—approximately 48,000 liters—a heat pump with a heating capacity of 10–12 kW consumes between 1.5 and 2.5 kW of electricity per hour. If the heat pump runs 6–8 hours a day from May through October, monthly consumption ranges from 270 to 600 kWh. At the current price of electricity in Spain—approximately 0.18 euros per kWh on the off-peak rate—the monthly cost is 50 to 110 euros, significantly lower than that of a gas boiler or conventional electric water heater.

The market offers a wide range of options based on capacity and technology. 6–8 kW heat pumps for pools up to 30,000 liters cost between 1,200 and 1,800 euros. Those rated at 10–14 kW for pools ranging from 30,000 to 60,000 liters cost between 1,800 and 2,800 euros. Those rated at 16–20 kW for large or community pools cost between 2,800 and 4,500 euros. Professional installation adds an additional 300 to 600 euros. The most highly rated brands in the Spanish market are Zodiac, Hayward, Astralpool, and Viessmann. It is recommended to invest in a variable-speed inverter model, which automatically adjusts power output as needed and can reduce energy consumption by up to an additional 30% compared to fixed-speed models.

Heat Pumps vs. Solar Thermal Panels for Pools

Solar thermal panels have a similar or higher initial cost—ranging from 2,000 to 5,000 euros including installation—but their operating cost is practically zero. However, they are completely dependent on solar radiation, which in Andalusia and the Mediterranean is very efficient from May through September but insufficient in the fall or on cloudy days. The heat pump operates at outdoor temperatures as low as 5 degrees, allowing the swimming season to be extended through November or even December in coastal areas of Andalusia.

How to Properly Size Your Heat Pump

The basic calculation involves multiplying the pool’s volume in cubic meters by 0.25 to obtain the minimum heating capacity in kW. For a 50-cubic-meter pool, you would need a heat pump of at least 12.5 kW. Factors that increase heating requirements include cold weather, an outdoor pool exposed to strong winds, and using the pool outside of peak season.

Extending the Swimming Season in Andalusia with a Heat Pump

In provinces such as Málaga, Seville, Granada, and Almería, a good heat pump can keep the water at 28 degrees from mid-March through late October, extending the swimming season by two or three months compared to an unheated pool. When combined with an isothermal cover, energy savings can exceed 50%.
