Pool Heating and Cooling: Methods, Costs, and Energy Efficiency

One of the decisions that has the greatest impact on your enjoyment of a private pool is installing a water heating system. In Andalusia, where the sun shines for much of the year, it’s possible to extend the swimming season from early March to late November with the right combination of technology and insulation. In this article, we compare the main systems available in 2026.
Pool Heating Methods
1. Air-source heat pump
This is currently the most energy-efficient method. The heat pump extracts heat from the ambient air and transfers it to the water through a thermodynamic cycle. Its efficiency is measured by the COP (Coefficient of Performance): a modern heat pump achieves a COP of 5 to 7, meaning that for every kWh of electricity consumed, it generates between 5 and 7 kWh of useful heat.
The installation cost of a heat pump suitable for a 50 m³ pool ranges from 2,500 to 5,000 euros. The monthly operating cost in Andalusia during the transitional months (March–April, October–November) is approximately 40–80 euros, depending on the outdoor temperature and the target water temperature.
2. Solar Thermal Collectors
The solar system is the most sustainable and, in the long term, the most economical to operate. Solar collectors—typically made of black polypropylene for swimming pools—absorb solar radiation and transfer heat to the water through a piping system. In Andalusia, with more than 3,000 hours of sunshine per year, this system can maintain the pool at a comfortable temperature from April through October without any additional energy costs.
The initial investment ranges from 1,500 to 4,000 euros, depending on the required collector area (general rule: 50–75% of the pool’s surface area). The lifespan of solar collectors exceeds 20 years with minimal maintenance. The main limitation is dependence on solar radiation: on cloudy days or in winter, performance drops significantly.
3. Gas Water Heater
A gas water heater (propane or natural gas) is the most powerful option for heating large volumes of water quickly. It is ideal for pools used occasionally—such as at vacation homes where you want hot water within a few hours—or as a backup system in winter when other methods are insufficient.
The installation cost ranges from 1,500 to 3,000 euros. Operating costs are significantly higher than those of a heat pump: heating 50 m³ of water from 15°C to 26°C can cost between 40 and 80 euros in gas. For intensive, year-round use, this cost becomes prohibitive and makes other methods more cost-effective.
4. Electric Heating Element
An electric heating element is the cheapest option to install (€500–1,500) but the most expensive to operate. With a COP of 1 (it converts each kWh of electricity into exactly 1 kWh of heat), it is up to 5–7 times less efficient than a heat pump. It is recommended only for very small pools or as an occasional supplement.
Optimal combination: reinforced liner + thermal cover + heat pump
The most efficient strategy for maximizing heating and cooling savings combines three elements. First, the dark reinforced liner (available in anthracite or deep navy blue) passively absorbs more solar heat than light-colored mosaic tile linings, helping to raise the water temperature by several degrees without any energy cost. Second, a bubble thermal cover or automatic roll-up cover retains heat overnight and during hours of non-use, reducing heat loss by up to 70%. Third, the heat pump operates only when the temperature falls below the set target, with minimal energy consumption.
ROI Calculation and Season Extension in Andalusia
Without heating, the water temperature in an Andalusian pool is pleasant (>24°C) from June to September—about 4 months. With a heat pump and thermal cover, the comfortable swimming season extends from March to November: 9 months of swimming per year. In purely economic terms, an efficient heat pump pays for itself compared to gas in 3–5 years, and compared to electric heating elements in 2–3 years. Given current energy prices and future prospects, efficient electrification is the smartest choice.
Maintenance of HVAC Systems
The heat pump requires an annual inspection of the refrigerant circuit and cleaning of the heat exchanger. Solar collectors need to be cleaned of accumulated dirt (once or twice a year) and their connections inspected. The gas heater must be inspected annually by a certified technician for safety reasons.
