Chlorine-Free Natural Pool: How It Works and What You Need

Natural pools, also known as bio-pools or swimming ponds, are an increasingly popular alternative to conventional chemically treated pools. They function as a balanced aquatic ecosystem where the water is purified biologically, without chlorine or other synthetic disinfectants. The result is clean, crystal-clear water that is perfectly safe for swimming, set within a setting of great aesthetic value.
The Concept: Nature as a Filter
The principle behind a natural swimming pool is simple: instead of using chlorine to eliminate bacteria and algae, an ecosystem is created where beneficial bacteria, aquatic plants, and microscopic organisms naturally maintain the water’s balance. The water is purified as it circulates through areas of plants that absorb nutrients (nitrates, phosphates) and through gravel beds where nitrifying bacteria live.
The result is biologically active yet safe water: with a stable pH, free of dangerous pathogens, and without the skin problems associated with chlorine (eye irritation, dry skin, respiratory issues in indoor pools).
Zoned Design: The Key to the System
A well-designed natural swimming pool is divided into at least two clearly distinct zones:
Swimming zone: The area where people swim. It must have a minimum depth of 1.5 m for swimming. The walls and bottom are generally lined with reinforced PVC sheeting, which provides a smooth, durable surface that is compatible with the biological ecosystem (it does not release toxic substances). Dark or natural colors (anthracite, stone gray) give the pool an appearance more akin to a natural lake.
Regeneration zone: A shallow area (30–80 cm deep) planted with water-purifying aquatic species. This is where most of the biological purification takes place. The most commonly used plants in Spain are common reed (Phragmites australis), broadleaf cattail (Typha latifolia), lake sedge (Schoenoplectus lacustris), and floating plants such as water hyacinth or duckweed.
Water circulates continuously between the two zones via low-power pumps. In some designs, an intermediate settling zone is added, containing gravel of different particle sizes, which acts as an additional mechanical and biological filter.
Regulations in Spain
Regulations governing natural swimming pools in Spain are evolving. At the national level, there is no specific, unified legislation, but many autonomous communities and municipalities have developed their own ordinances. In general, you are required to submit a technical plan signed by a qualified professional, conduct periodic microbiological water tests, and comply with the safety requirements (fencing, minimum depths, etc.) applicable to any swimming pool.

Costs: Is it more expensive than a conventional pool?
The initial investment in a natural swimming pool is typically 20% to 40% higher than that of a conventional pool of the same size, mainly due to the need to increase the total area (swimming area + regeneration area) and for landscaping. For a high-quality residential bio-pool (swimming area of 30–40 m², regeneration area of similar size), the budget ranges from €25,000 to €60,000.
However, maintenance costs are significantly lower in the long term: no chemicals to purchase, minimal electricity consumption (only low-power pumps), and no need to drain and refill the pool every year. Annual maintenance for a well-designed natural pool can be up to 70% cheaper than that of an equivalent conventional pool.
Year-Round Maintenance
Maintaining a natural pool is different from maintaining a conventional pool but no more labor-intensive. It includes the manual or mechanical removal of filamentous algae in the summer (when solar radiation is intense), pruning aquatic plants in the fall, inspecting the pump system, and cleaning the gravel beds every 5–10 years. In winter, the pool can be left filled with water; the plants go dormant, but the beneficial bacteria remain active.
