Why polyester and fiberglass pools fail

Fiberglass pools (glass-reinforced polyester, GRP) are manufactured as a single piece with an outer resin layer and an inner finishing layer called the gel-coat. That gel-coat is the only real barrier between the water and the structural laminate. Over the years, UV radiation, chlorine, disinfectants and fill-and-empty cycles degrade that layer, and that is where the failures begin:

  • Osmosis (the "polyester disease"): water penetrates through micropores in the gel-coat and reacts with the resin, forming blisters filled with acidic liquid. When pierced, a viscous liquid comes out and smells of vinegar. It is a progressive, irreversible process that weakens the laminate.
  • Hairline cracks and crazing: thermal shocks, ground settlement and material fatigue create fine cracks that turn into leak paths.
  • Gel-coat loss: rough surface, whitish (calcareous) staining and loss of gloss and color.
  • Leaks and loose skimmers: movement of the shell against the civil works detaches inlets and outlets.

The underlying problem is that repainting the gel-coat or applying resins is a temporary patch: you treat the symptom, not the cause. Reinforced membrane completely replaces the waterproofing function of the damaged gel-coat.

What reinforced membrane is and why it works on fiberglass

Reinforced membrane is a reinforced PVC lining made of two PVC layers with a polyester mesh sandwiched between them, giving it mechanical and dimensional strength. Unlike a classic liner (a simple smooth sheet that hangs), reinforced membrane is hot-air welded, creating a continuous, monolithic, fully watertight lining that conforms to the exact shape of the fiberglass shell.

On a polyester pool it works especially well because:

  • The reinforcing mesh absorbs shell movements and bridges existing hairline cracks, holding the water even if the fiberglass still has cracks underneath.
  • It creates a new waterproof barrier that isolates the laminate from the water, stopping the progression of osmosis.
  • Thicknesses of 1.5 mm (residential) or 2 mm (intensive and communal use) that resist chlorine, UV and abrasion, with antibacterial and anti-UV treatments in ranges such as Renolit Alkorplan.

  • Draining and inspection: we assess the real condition of the laminate, map the osmosis areas and check the rigidity of the shell.
  • Cleaning and sanding: we remove osmosis blisters, scrape off loose gel-coat and sand to create a stable surface. Active blisters are opened, dried and treated.
  • Structural repair: we fill deep cracks and level with specific fillers and mortars to achieve a sound substrate.
  • Geotextile and profiles: we install geotextile as a protection and separation layer when the substrate requires it, and fix the perimeter anchoring profile at the coping.
  • Placement and hot welding: we lay out the membrane and join the sheets with hot-air welding, sealing each seam. We test the watertightness of every weld.
  • Accessory sealing: we reseal skimmers, return inlets, lights and drains with flanges and polyurethane sealant to prevent new leaks.
